The ’09 Ox Tuo (200g) is a thirst quencher right at the cusp of a darker stage. It is offered by a luxury brand that focuses primarily upon Lancang (Simao) area. Comprised of old tree Jingmai, Mangjing, Mannong, Bangwei and Bingdao material, this tuo strikes a nice balance between floral and fruity. The flowers evoke a sense of honeysuckle and the fruit perhaps granny smith and red delicious apple.
The Ox‘s tight compression, characteristic of most tuo, nevertheless affords easy separation. This translates into a good deal of whole leaves and a steady drinking experience from one infusion to the next. At the same time, its transformation has been at an ox’s pace.
It tastes of a light honey, with strong Zen undertones and a boozey back end of that is particular to puerhs of this quality and age. Its thickness is medium and astringency the type that is quite noticeable. In fact, much of the adventure begins after swallowing. It’s cheeky, sticking also to the tongue and lips. Saliva ensues. The aroma in the cup is outstandingly thick and present, a marked contrast to the brew itself.
The Ox’s qi is nothing short of deadly. It’s very heady but can also be felt throughout the body. In fact, the wrapper boldly states “Intoxicating.” Positively no smoke blowing on that account. . . and speaking of smoke, there isn’t any in the taste or aroma.
The Ox Tuo is for the experienced Zen drunkard. It’s been stored vigorously in Los Angeles since mid ’16 and it is still very young, light, and clean. The flavors, sweetness, and texture are not in-your-face, but given the cup and qi effect its superiority is unmistakable. 200g.
